Academic Integrity League
Currently, the Kazakh equivalent of the American "Ivy League" brings together 12 institutes and universities.
Дата публикации: 27.05.2019Ten more universities in Kazakhstan may join the Academic Integrity League, according to Kulyash Shamshidinova, the Minister of Education and Science of the Republic. She mentioned that there is ongoing work within the Academic Integrity League, which currently consists of 12 universities. More than 10 universities are candidates for joining, and as part of their eligibility, they must increase the number of written exams, moving away from test-based exams.
The Academic Integrity League was established in Kazakhstan last year, following the model of the Ivy League in the United States. Membership in this league guarantees a high level of education in the participating universities. Members of the Kazakh Academic Integrity League also implement international plagiarism prevention systems, including mandatory checks of all written works by students and faculty in these systems. In cases of violations of academic integrity principles, a university can be excluded from the league.
Regarding the fight against corruption in the higher education system, the Minister reminded that her department plans to transition the entire student knowledge assessment system, including the final stage - diploma issuance, into electronic format.
She mentioned that apart from the knowledge assessment system itself (student knowledge surveys), which will naturally continue, universities are implementing a new course on anti-corruption measures. This work has already started. This year, a student survey was conducted, and more than 70% of respondents stated that they do not encounter this phenomenon. However, the remaining 30% should alert all of us.
