Fifteen months after the emergence of such a disruptive force as generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), students, faculty, and staff in higher education continue to wonder whether, how, when, and why to use GenAI for teaching, learning, and assessment.

Of course, students are already using these programs, taking some (or all) of the academic work off their shoulders, but as GenAI develops, it will be able to perform all of the cognitive load for students. What does this all mean for assessment and the integrity of degrees (diplomas)?
